The Perfect Score

I am a fan of book turned into movie and vice versa. I guess I like it because I like to see the difference from the written material to the visual material. But actually, the book and the movie are the same, only that the book is more detailed but nonetheless, I could have just watched the movie at HBO instead of spending 200 php on the book. Anyways, what caught my eye was the book was published by MTV, so you know how it goes. After reading the book, I wanted to watch the movie itself, thinking it will be more exciting or whatsoever. So thanks to HBO, I got my wish. But after watching it personally, I felt this movie was a bit unfulfilling. I liked the way they ended it but during the beginning and the climax of it I felt really disappointed. Maybe it was because I got the impression that I was cheated since I read the book, but thinking right now, it was because of how the movie just fell flat. The comedy in it wasn't exactly a laugh-out-loud emoticon, maybe just a smile. The actors weren't as good as I expected them to be, although they fit my imagination when I visualized them, most of them were just boring. It was too bad for the plot was interesting and they had a nice soundtrack and MTV produced it! But I guess, it will only be a great book than a blockbuster film. Boo hoo.

When I was in second year high school, or last year, I learned to play the guitar. But with myself being a fickle minded person, I got bored of it. Maybe, I'll just leave the guitar playing to Char. Usually, I lose interests in things pretty fast, even though in the beginning I'd even beg just to have that thing. Moving on, as I reminisce about my guitar playing days, this was the only song whose chords I can remember! My teacher, Sir Chris from Yamaha School of Music, told me that these chords were the easiest. So this is probably the reason why this is the only song whose chords I can remember. How typical of me.

I have now realized that when I first hear a song, I don't really understand the lyrics, but I listen to the beat and melody more. I guess it's because my the tempo of the song actually affects my mood. Sometimes, I fear the media. Its effects are too powerful for me too handle. A simple song can make you like a movie. Media practitioners really know how to hook, line and sinker the audience and since we are the audience who are in comparison like fishes, most of us hungry for that worm fall for it.

"In This Diary"
The Ataris

Here in this diary,
I write you visions of my summer.
It was the best I ever had.
There were choruses and sing-alongs,
And that unspoken feeling of knowing
Right now is all that matters
All the nights we stayed up talking
and listening to 80's songs;
quoting lines from all those movies that we love.
It still brings a smile to my face.
I guess when it comes down to it. . .

Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up:
These are the best days of our lives.
The only thing that matters
is just following your heart
and eventually you'll finally get it right.

Breaking into hotel swimming pools,
and wreaking havoc on our world.
Hanging out at truck stops just to pass the time.
The black top's singing me to sleep.
Lighting fireworks in parking lots,
illuminate the blackest nights.
Cherry cokes under this moonlight summer sky.
2015 Riverside, it's time to say, "goodbye".
Get on the bus, it's time to go.

Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up:
These are the best days of our lives.
The only thing that matters
is just following your heart
and eventually you'll finally get it right.

The moment I heard this song, I fell in love with it. Kind of low, but, this song really speaks to me. Well, the reason would probably be because its topic is about growing up, which we all know is something everyone can relate to. But this song mostly caters to teenagers because this is the time where we find out who and what we are. In short, it's a crucial part of our lives. Not to mention that during our teenage years, it is where we are trained for when we don't have our parents to lean on or in other words when we become adults.

I love to listen to music, well who doesn't? For me to find this song, is already sort of cliché, but it really just clicked with me. The message is already very common within the other songs, so I think the reason why I liked this song was thanks to the punk band, The Ataris. Must be because of their catchy melody or maybe the vocalist's voice. But anyways, its message is clear and simple. It is about how we should enjoy every moment of our lives before we lose the opportunity to. Especially, when you're a teenager, when it's understood that you have raging hormones, peer pressure and the whole caboodle. This is also the time wherein our responsibility, compared to the adults is small fry. So in the end we should try to make the most of it.

Lies
by Lisa Zimmerman

The sun is a broken window on fire.
The stars speak the color of my real name.
Angels whisper Osama Osama in their sleep.
The dog's bones gleam in the dark.
The dark is the underside of God's one eyelid.
Hearts are like the sun only not on fire.
Or do I mean not like a window
Or do I mean green glass you can see through?

A lie, according to the Encarta Dictionary, is to say something that is not true in a conscious effort to deceive somebody. From the meaning itself it already gives a negative vibe, after all it is a sin. I am pretty sure all of us have been telling lies of our own and have been lied to. But what's the reason for lying? Why can't everybody just tell the truth? "The truth will set you free." Is that saying just a thing in the past?

In my point of view, a lie is a lie and it's bad, period. That's why the author even compared it to the underside of God's one eyelid. Like how people lie even though doesn't want to see it. Osama is even mentioned here, since he is a terrorist, telling us that he betrayed America and so on. I guess when it comes to something bad, poems sort of minimize the harshness and turn it into something so fancy. Sometimes I ponder whether poets aren't really that vocal about their feelings or it's just through words that they can express themselves. In my point of view, if they can only express themselves nonverbally, then they're missing out on a lot. For me it's still better if you say it verbally, but it depends on the people so basically my entry is just about how I just wonder how poets make such great works of art according to my theory which is that they can't express themselves well verbally. Anyhoo, if it weren't for their nonverbal quality then we wouldn't have experienced such amazing art.

"Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep"
by Mary Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep
I am thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

I like this poem since it doesn't tackle on how death is so sad. It tackles on how a person will always stay with you, but not physically of course. When reading this poem, I feel sort of relieved since I have already experienced this thing. The good thing about this poem is it's true. When someone dies, just because you can't see them anymore doesn't mean that they'll be just an nonentity or what. The moments and the memories you shared with them will always be in your heart. Okay, cutting off the cheesy stuff, all in all I like this poem. So if ever I die (knock on wood!), I would like this to be engraved in my grave.

Thanks to Google for letting me find this poem and the picture above.

"Grace" by Lee Soo Young

I don't know why but I just happen to like Korean dramas, movies, etc. I guess it's because of the way they show it, like how a preschool teacher tells a story to a very eager toddler. That's the effect they have in me. Like this video above, I neve could imagine that a Filipino would this. Not that I'm being a Anti-Philippines or something, it's just that they really have their way of capturing the viewers' attention. I mean, look around; it's already invading the Philippines. Oh, they also have a name for tis phenomenon, the Korean Wave! Moving on, I really have to figure out why I like them so much. Their actions are conservative, for example they don't have to kiss so passionately for us to know that they love each other, a simple kiss on the cheek can do. Maybe it's because of the simplicity, but in other cultures a kiss on the cheek can only symbolize friendship. So right now, I'd go for my theory which is on how they tell their story.

With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept

"What's wrong with you? He's just a kid. We're all just kids and we just have this life and the things you say or do, we feel that. How can you have so much hate in your heart? How can you act like it doesn't matter? It does matter. What happened to us? We're just kids. We can't be like this. It's not possible."

How dramatic, eh? This was a line from an episode of One Tree Hill wherein it involved a guy, named Jimmy Edwards, who brought a gun to school. He brought a gun as protection, since he was intimidated by the people and that he wanted was to be noticed. This storyline is sort of recycled already so at first I thought, "Not another teen angst episode." But I actually liked this story not because of the actors and the actresses but because of how the characters faced this phenomenon, and it's all thanks to the script writer. It all started when the time capsule, which was about to be opened 50 years later, was opened recently. It held private matters like how Jimmy detested his school saying that nobody was worth remembering, he also told the truth about some guy who was a Casanova and so on. He got bullied and we all know how Americans are, so in the end he just couldn't take it pulled the trigger, accidentally injuring Peyton on the leg. Also he held hostage several people from the Tutorial Center where this line comes up and how the people he held hostage keep on pursuading him that he can back away from this matter. One even said that high school is only about 700 days out of 30,000 days of your life but his pain still remained. In the end, he ended up killing himself. Usually in stories like this, the "angsty teen" will see the error in his ways and decide to turn over a new leaf but in this one, he dies. I got shocked and asked myself, that if something like this was aired in the Philippines, I think it would have been censored. But I was glad I watched this, it woke me up to the reality that this really happens, not all the time though, but it still does. I have to hand it to the script writer for thinking of a plot like this.

"The media's power is frail. Without the people's support, it can be shut off with the ease of turning a light switch."

This is quote from the Philippines' former president Corazon Aquino or in easier terms, Kris Aquino's mother. Everybody is saying how media is powerful and here she comes saying we, the people, are more powerful than it is. Which is true, because without our support media will be meaningless. The media was made for us.
I believe that the media is there for us to react upon. Whether our reaction is good or bad, it still benefits them which is kind of like how good publicity is bad publicity. But moving on, we can't help but say that media is a big part of what we are. It's part of our being, it consumes us. It might sound harsh but this is the reality.
So basically what you will find in my media log is about music, tv shows, articles about anything that fascinates me, images, etc, anything about media since this is a media log and also a healthy part of my grade. Mostly whatever I will write, er... I mean, type will be based upon my knowledge and the guidelines which were given. This pretty much wraps up what you will be able to see in the future.
